Fixed IP address

I have a comprehensive home network with many key items active at any one time. All the significant ones have dedicated IP address which I keep a careful record of should I not be around to manage the system.
It appears that my new ZenMini is to be the odd one out. Is it possible for you to add, at some future date, the ability for the user to allocate a dedicated address to the unit and other Innuos devices?

Hi Tim,

We had this possibility in the past and it caused a lot of issues. Some users would set a fixed IP then later down the line, they would change their router - going for a different subnet - and this caused the system to lose network connectivity. It would the need to come to factory to get that reset.

All modern routers allow you to set static IPs on the router itself. We believe this is by far the best option as it does provide you a static IP and allows the server to connect to any network automatically if that ever changes. However, we're listening if there's a compelling use case to use static IPs at the server itself.

Thanks Nuno. I do take your point and can see that some might cause more harm than good.
I am interested that you say that the router can actually allocate an IP to a device. My experience of the DHCP server is that it can make a reservation for a device so that no other device can use it but not actually set it on the device. If I have missed something I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Agree with Nuno here, I can see how this can cause device management issues as the device has no other interfaces than enthernet. If this feature is implemented then there needs to be a way to reset to default (maybe using the power button?)

The Reservation for a device works pretty much like a fixed IP - your router will always allocate that IP to the device. This is much more flexible and you can manage all fixed IPs in one place.
